project-management-i-want-it-all-knee

The knee-jerk response to prioritizing requirements is to mark everything as a must-have . "I need everything before the product becomes generally available. I want it ALL!" Give me a break.

Granted, if a requirement is written in the SRS, then it must be because you want it. But the reality is some features are more important than others and a good product manager can tell them apart.

If everything is high priority, then there are no priorities. Let me repeat that statement once more. If everything is high priority, then there are no priorities.

Unless this is your very first software project, you know that time is always a constraint. Combine an overly optimistic project schedule with a list of requirements that aren't prioritized, and what do you get? A team of developers that implement what they want, when they want.

You have a choice. You can (a) leave it up to the development team to pick and choose their favorite features to implement, or (b) give them a clear sense of direction by prioritizing the requirements. Have them start with the must-haves, followed by the nice-to-haves. When the project deadline comes up, you can decide to extend the project schedule to add a few more nice-to-haves, but you won't be forced to because your product will already include all of the must-have requirements that would make or break your sales. In other words, you're managing the schedule instead of letting the schedule manage you.

12 Tips to Network Your Way to Success

Lots of people network but few reap the rewards of zeroing in on their potential when it comes to networking. Here are some tips to help fill the gap between where you are now and where you can be.

1- Be Generous- Give without expectations and you will be surprised at how it returns to you. It may not come from the same source but a new client, referral, or opportunity will show up because of your efforts.

2- Be Consistent- As in marketing, the more consistent your networking efforts the more productive they become. Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerilla Marketing stated, "I hate to admit this, but mediocre marketing with commitment works better than brilliant marketing without commitment."

3- Know & Clarify WIIFT- When creating your introduction clarify who your target market is and "what's in it for them". Sell benefits. Verizon sells wireless phone service but sells it when you believe they never stop working to fill your phone service needs. "Can you hear me now?"

4- Get Involved- Getting involved puts you in a consistent position of visibility.

5- Be a Powerful Resource & Advocate for Others- Expand your network and be an advocate for others. Use your networking resources to hook up people you know with others. What goes around comes around.

6- Learn the Needs of Others then Help Fill Those Needs- Can your business fill their needs? Who do you know who can? Either way you have a win/win situation.

7- Build the Know- Like- Trust Factor- Building relationships is more important than collecting lots of leads. Think quality vs. quantity. Connect deeper vs. on the surface.

8- It's More Important to Receive Business Cards than Hand Them Out- This puts you in a position to be able to follow up.

9- Consistently Follow- Up- It's not enough to have a network. Follow up and continue developing your relationships and network. Have a good reason to follow up or ask "how can I help you?"

10- Develop Advocates- Build relationships with Centers of Influence who connect with your ideal client or customer. Offer incentives for referrals or provide great benefits.

11- Be Curious- The 6 Degrees of Separation Theory states that we are only 6 people away from finding out anything we need to know. Be curious and you will be surprised at what people, resources, and information are at your finger tips.

12- Develop You- You can grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. Start there!

To shift into action choose one tip to focus on for a week and see what new results come your way. Then try on another and so on. Before you know it your networking efforts will be paving your way to success. Starting Now!

15 Website Elements That Attract Visitors

Here is a quick list of components that make a websiteattractive. They are listed in layers of attractivenessbeginning with the "must" haves, to "nice to haves."

1. State the website's purpose up front and clearly of thesite. Do this as quickly as possible. The visitor needs toknow immediately if they have landed on the right site. They also need to know "what's in it for me to stay here."If you don't provide this, they are gone. 90% of the siteson the Net don't do this.

2. Give visitors the ability to search for exactly whatthey are looking for, if they have something exact inmind. A "site search feature" satisfies this best. Allowthe search feature to be prominently displayed and nothidden away somewhere. It is best place in the navigationalsystem so that it shows up on every page. Sales letter onlywebsites are an exception to this rule. Return visitors andvisitors that have something specifically in mind, want theoption and ability to find what they want fast. So give itto them.

3. Photos allow connection. Especially to people whoprocess visually. Clip art gets them to pay attention, however, it doesn't create much of a connection. Personalphotos connect within reason. Keep them less than three toa page. One photo always needs to be in the top portion ofthe screen on the first page. It doesn't need to be large, but attractive.

4. Ways to capture visitors information wherever possible.

5. Place items on the site that keep them lingering. Audioand video are one of these, yet there are other less timeconsuming and inexpensive ways to keep them entertained.

6. Articles. For solopreneur sites, your own writtenarticles. For other sites, articles with various authorsyet on focus.

7. Interactive elements. For example: response forms, quizzes

8. If you use a shopping cart, it must be fluid, nohiccups. PayPal is not a shopping cart, it's a hiccup. Allauto responders must be well written and positive. Ifsomeone purchased something, they need the energy of "thankyou."

9. Give offers that are of value.

10. Clear path of where a newcomer can start if it is theirfirst visit.

11. Newsletter that is consistent with the 80/20 rule.80% value and 20% marketing.

12. E-courses of value.

13. Well-written e-books: 50-75 pages, plus valuableinformation (info not found anywhere else). Length doesn'tdo more than provide perceptive value. Once purchased andthe vastness is only fluff, then your credibility is shot.Complimentary e-books meet the same requirements.

14. Give them other ways to receive more on...you if you arethe focus...or the information if that is the focus.

15. Automated referral system. If you want referrals foryour products or services, make it easy for you to get them.Set it up so it's as automatic as possible, and clear andeasy for someone to send you a referral. Be clear on whatand how you want to give for that referral.

Thirty Minutes of Exercise a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

"Exercise is good for you!" If you had a dollar for every time you heard this statement uttered, you'd be rich by now, right? Well, proponents of everyday physical activity aren't just blowing smoke when they repeat this mantra. Medical research has uncovered resounding evidence to back up this "good for you" claim. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Centers for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion all recommend the same thing when it comes to regular exercise: American adults should aim for 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week.

Inquiring minds want to know, so how exactly will daily exercise impact your health and well-being? Regular physical activity positively affects not only your body but also your mind. That's right: Exercise simultaneously improves your physical, your emotional and your psychological health. In fact, it's a triple-threat combatant against the physical and mental disorders Americans most often face: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, stress, anxiety and depression, just to name a few.

When industry experts stand in staunch agreement, you know it's time to focus your attention on their advice and take their concurring counsel to heart. To that end, consider daily exercise's benefits as purported by three of the leading medical sources: the American Heart Association, the Surgeon General's Report on Exercise and Fitness Management magazine.

The American Heart Association (AHA) lists a reduction in the risk of heart disease at the top of its daily physical activity benefit list. Exercise improves circulation throughout the body and lowers cholesterol, thereby decreasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. The AHA also touts exercise's ability to counteract the health problems plaguing today's young people: obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and poor lifestyle habits. In so doing, it prevents the conditions that lead to heart attacks and strokes later in life.

The U.S. Surgeon General, while echoing the AHA's claims, narrows down physical activity's benefits into specific categories. Overall, he maintains that exercise reduces one's risk of dying prematurely, but explicitly mentions a reduction in heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, colon cancer, depression and anxiety and obesity among its lifesaving advantages. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, healthier bones muscles and joints as well as improved psychological well-being are some of the other benefits regular exercisers enjoy.

In an article entitled "The Psychological Benefits of Your Exercise Program," Fitness Management magazine further details physical activity's favorable effects on emotional and mental health. In particular, the article cites the following psychological advantages of exercise: 1) It reduces feelings of anxiety, worry, self-doubt and uncertainty about the future; 2) It lower stress levels and the accompanying physical complaints, such as headaches and muscle tension; 3) It energizes, thereby enhancing one's mood; 4) It improves sleep quality; and 5) It improves one's self-image and -confidence by keeping weight down and elevating mood.

So, while an apple a day is still sound advice, it seems exercising every day is the new and improved ticket to keeping the doctor away.

A Guide to Sell Your Domain Name Quickly

Everyday I read this question on different forums "how I sell my domain quickly?" To me earning huge income from domain and selling it quickly are two different things, and you have to select one. Many newbie register a domain in the hope that next day someone will purchase it in two million dollars, which is obviously nonsense. If you are not successful in domain business, forget everything you know about domain trading and start a fresh in a scientific way. Now I explain the whole thing step by step.

Domain Acquisition

Always try to backorder an expired domain instead of registering a new one. Expired domains are already listed on search engines and most have some traffic so you can sell them on high price. If you have registered a new domain the maximum sale price of this domain will be 60$.

Never ask too much for your domain

If you want to sell your domain on an auction never ask too much in the beginning. Your customer will feel very freaky when (s)he will see the price tag of 10000$ for a domain which has a no traffic. But there are some exceptions to this rule specially if your domain is already receiving 100,000 hits a month then ball is in your court you can demand anything for it. Domains with low or now traffic as I said shouldn't ask too much in the beginning.

Sell domain and website together

In domain name industry supply is far much then demand. Selling website with domain add a good value to your domain. If someone want to start a forum first of all he will purchase domain ,hosting and setting up forum application. But if you are giving everything in a single price there is highly possibility of your domain sale.

Sell Domain as a package

Sometimes including different kinds of goodies with domain works really well. Few days before I sold a domain name flirtme.net. I included my reseller package with it which contain ebooks, scripts and software and sold whole stuff in 50$ within a week of domain registration.

Words are most important

If you are going to register a domain, make sure you have proper combination of words. For example, I registered a domain learnwinvista.com two days before everyone can easily remember it but if I use words such 456vis.com or vistre34.com I am sure it took me many months to sell this kind of domains. So domains which can be remembered easily has great chances of sell quickly

Payment Mechanism

You should ask to your client which payment he wants to use. Try to avoid Paypal because it is not universal. Many people loss sales because of Paypal. Storm pay and Ikobo are good alternatives. Another way is to use your own credit card processing facility such as worldpay. But the best solution is to use sedo.com. List your domain on sedo.com its totally free they will receive payment and transfer it to your bank account. But your minimum sale price should be 60$ mans you can't sell your domain less than 60$. Besides selling domain with sedo will give your customer the piece of mind that there are no chances of fraud.

Scottish Roadtrips -- Encountering Porridge with Salt and Other Dangers

Edinburgh and beyond

Roadtrips around Britain

It's hard to overstate the poetry of Edinburgh. Even when crossing the North Bridge in a screaming gale, fearing you lost your nose five streets ago. It's hard to be grumpy with the magnificent Old Town spread out in front of you, and Arthur's seat rearing up to your left.

But if you're in Edinburgh for a while, I highly recommend getting out and driving through some of the countryside. As those who live in Scotland (but not in Edinburgh) like to say occasionally, Edinburgh isn't as Scottish as the rest of the place. So if you really want to get a feel for the soul and history of this porridge-with-salt, haggis-neeps-and-tatties country, you'll need to get out.

Spires, spectres and spirits (of the whiskey kind)

So have a float around Edinburgh, and soak in the ? this might naff, but really the only word to describe it ? soak in the majesty of it all. Really. Go there. You'll see. Pop up the Royal Mile and drop in on the city's number one tourist attraction - that castle. For a dose of depressing and chilling history I vigorously suggest you take a night tour of Edinburgh's graveyards, which still sometimes have pieces of bone surfacing if it rains too hard. Interesting, and cheaper than a colostomy.

For those who're fond of brisk walks and the best views in town, there's Arthur's Seat - an extinct volcano sitting plum in the centre of the city. And for those fond of a drink - welcome to the happiest time in your life. The Grassmarket is a probably the best place to start, with pubs like Biddy Mulligans, and The Last Drop. Whistle Binkies on the South Bridge for live music. And to finish the night? Well, this is a quick plug for the Penny Black. Be warned, it opens around 6am and it's not always pretty. But it's a damn good romp if you're already seeing double.

To get out and about to see the surrounding areas, you've got trains and buses which can take you to most places, but if you want to be able to go where you want, when you want, it's very hard to beat renting out a little car for a few days. If you're booking through the internet to save money, sites like http://www.vroomvroomvroom.co.uk (Car Hire Edinburgh) are good because they have contracts with all the biggest car rental companies, and you can then directly compare prices and grab a good deal.

Nearby for a quick trip

So, once you're motorised, you should wander through nearby border towns like Peebles. Great for a pint and chat in beautiful surrounds. The Tweed River is great for fishing too, if you feel you're up to facing the weather.

A must-do would be Stirling, visiting its castle, and wandering around the site at Bannockburn where the Scottish won their independence fighting the British hordes in 1314. There's also the National Wallace Monument nearby - a tribute to the country's most famous freedom-fighter. He was the poor man who was embarrassingly portrayed by Mel Gibson sporting a dodgy mullet in Braveheart. Where's Ewan McGregor when you need him?

Onwards and upwards for monsters, battles and hairy people armed with firewater

Then, keeping onwards, and sort of to the West, you've got Oban and the little ferries which can get you to the Scottish Isles. Because you're in the area, it'd be very silly not to go to Fort William (only a millimetre or two away on the map). From here you can explore Glen Nevis - the area is the natural wonder version of the man-made beauty to be found in Edinburgh. You'll need a lucky streak, though, if you want a cloudless day when climbing to the peak of the area's most popular mountain, Ben Nevis.

From here you could either start heading back in a roundabout fashion turning east and frolicking through Perth, Dundee and St Andrews, or set your car to speedy and head on up to Inverness to take a trip out monster-hunting on the freaky dark waters of Loch Ness. Another battlefield heavy with history is a small trip away from Inverness - the moor of Culloden. The last battle to be fought on British soil - it was bloody and quick, and followed by a very nasty period of brutality and suppression of the Scottish way of life, even though the battle wasn't really Scottish versus English. It was more a spat between rich boys over a crown.

If you haven't turned back by now, it would seem you're in for the long-haul. Further on up would then be your only option - the beautiful and lonely Highlands await. Go, and drink firewater with the reddest and hairiest Scotsmen of them all.

Three Ways to Add Leverage to Your Small Business

Remember those drawings from science class of how a lever works?

The lever was a long bar that rested atop a triangularly shaped fulcrum. One end of the lever was underneath the object to be raised. The other end of the lever was where downward force was applied to raise the object at the other end. The keys to whether or not the lever could raise the object were: 1) the distance of the fulcrum from the object to be raised, 2) the length of the lever, and 3) the force applied to the fulcrum.

In short, the longer the lever and the more force applied, the easier and faster you can move the object.

When mapping this diagram to the business of an independent professional, we find:

  • The professional is the fulcrum
  • The object to be moved is the business objective to be achieved
  • The lever is the resource to be amplifed
  • The downward force can be a body of knowledge or expertise; external resources (such as mentors/coaches, training, experts, etc.); an investment of time or money; the use of skills, tools, or talents; and the use of systems, processes, procedures, and structures.

Here are 3 of the many ways in which you can employ leverage in your business:

  • Take your resources and repurpose or reuse them in new and innovative ways to add to your services, products, or resources. Hence, the body of knowledge represented by the original resource is multiplied into several services/products/resources for your business. For example, I could take this article and use it both in my ezine and on my web site. I could also make it into an eclass by expanding it with calls to action on the part of the reader. Once it is expanded into an eclass, it's just another step into making it a web-based class. From there I could take it into being a multi-session teleclass or an on-site seminar.

Can you see that without much additional effort you can take one resource and multiply it into 5 or 6 additional resources for your business?

  • Take a resource and percolate it through multiple businesses for increased visibility.

For example, I could take this article and post it on several web sites that provided content for others to put in their ezines or on their web sites. I could also directly contact the webmasters at several of the bigger web sites that service my same target market of independent professionals and offer them the use of the article on their web site. Bingo! One article, multiple places of exposure.

  • Tap into other forces to achieve a desired objective.

For example, if you want to short-circuit the learning process on a particular business subject, you can hire a mentor or coach, attend a workshop or seminar, or buy a book or tape training series. In this way you are using the power of other people's knowledge and experience to speed your learning. And speed of learning is just another type of leverage.

The ultimate purpose of applying leverage in your business is to achieve your desired objectives with more speed and less effort. Where are you missing opportunities to apply the power of leverage in your business?

How You Can Find Freelance Writing Employment

How can you find writing jobs? Do you have proven skills that can propel you in the right direction? If so, then why are you looking for fresh vacancies? The best tool to those who have employment histories is to look to the companies that you have already worked for. There, they can help provide you with more work, or point you in the right direction.

There are many careers in which you need a good education to do well. This one is no different. Employment, freelance or with a company, is available to those who have a proven track record. For those that do not, though, they will have to prove themselves in other ways. It may be necessary to take on a proofreading career in order to get your foot in the freelance door. Or, you may find that editing is not helping you and therefore look for opportunities in other related fields. If you want to be a published author, you may have to start by doing copy for websites first. You must build your experience, then you will have the opportunities that you didn't have before.

Vacancies in this field are rarely easy to get. You may be able to write an article or two that gets published, but it is not easy to get regular writing employment. You will need to establish yourself first. With a solid education and a solid set of experienced references, you will find it easier to find the jobs that you have been looking for. Without this though, you will have to take whatever openings are available until you find your way past that sealed door. However, as soon as you crack it you are likely to find a range of suitable jobs. Then, all the lowly work will be well worth it.

How to Know What Defines the Best Golf Drivers

Why is it considered the most electrifying club in your golf bag? Why is it the first club anyone talks about when equipment is brought up? Why is it what everyone wants?

The answers are simple - POWER. It's all about the power of the long ball. The golfer who drives the ball the furthest is considered the man of the moment, and everyone wants to be that man. I guess it's an ego thing.

This mind game is played among all golfers form beginner to professional. It is one of the main driving forces behind the design of today's best golf drivers. The manufacturers are continually coming up with newer and better drivers that go further and straighter than the competition. They come in all shapes and sizes with the bigger is better attitude coming out on top.

A lot of the big oversized drivers are built to the largest legal size specifications under PGA rules and regulations. Combine that with the ultra thin super springy club faces. What you get is a kind of loaded canon. These clubs launch the golf balls high in the air and really long. We must emphasize really LONG.

A lot of the club makers have even taken the grooves off the clubfaces around the sweet spot areas. This is to reduce spin and allow the ball more distance with less resistance. What this also causes is less accuracy off the tee. But most golfers are willing to give up a little accuracy for more distance.

Now if you throw in the new technology in today's golf shafts it gets a little complicated. With all the different types of graphite, the raised and lowered flex and kick points, and now even tipping it almost seems out of control.

Wow, that's getting crazy. There is such a huge amount of possible grip, shaft, and club head combinations it can be confusing to the average golfer. But not to worry, there are a ton of great resources out there to get you fitted correctly.

Jet Lag - 7 Steps To A Successful Trip

Don't let jet lag spoil that much needed holiday trip to paradise or stop you from closing that career enhancing deal you've been working on for months.

Arriving full of excitement and anticipation is great, but finding that you can't sleep at night, you're tired during the day and you've got an upset stomach and a headache can do a lot more than just take the edge off your trip.

If you're seeking ways of preventing jet lag, or looking for the perfect jet lag remedy, then here are seven tips to start you on your search.

Tip 1. Clear the decks before your departure.

A much overlooked aspect of jet lag is the part played by stress. Running around trying to do a 1001 last minute jobs in the week before you fly. Worrying about whether the house will be safe. Sitting up until midnight the night before your flight paying the household bills. Sound familiar?

Plan well in advance and make sure that you've taken care of everything at least three or four days before you go. Then take it easy, get lots of rest and set aside time specifically for relaxation.

Tip 2. Start adjusting your bedtime before you go.

In the two weeks before your trip start to gradually adjust your bedtime. If you're flying east, bring your bedtime forward by ten or fifteen minutes each night so that, by the time you leave, you're going to bed about two hours earlier than normal. This will 'narrow the gap' between the time at which your body wants to go to bed and the time that the clock says you should go to bed at your destination.

Similarly, if you're traveling west, put your bedtime back by ten or fifteen minutes each day.

Tip 3. Reduce you caffeine intake.

Coffee, as well as other caffeinated drinks, both speeds up and slows down your internal body clock, depending upon the time of day that you consume it. When you're settled into a regular pattern of sleep this doesn't necessarily present too much of a problem, as the effects can tend to 'balance out'. However, when your body clock finds itself at odds with local time the effects of caffeine can be quite marked and add considerably to the problems of jet lag.

Tip 4. Avoid Pills.

With the exception of any prescribed medication that you normally take, you should avoid sleeping pills, so-called 'jet lag' pills and over the counter medication for jet lag. Not only do these have little or no beneficial effect, many of them can actually add to your problems.

In particular, avoid the common temptation to take sleeping pills during your flight. They may well help you to get to sleep on the aircraft, but they will add to your problems when you arrive at your destination.

Tip 5. Dress comfortably for your flight.

Choose comfortable and loose fitting clothes to travel in and tuck a pair of slippers into your carry-on luggage to wear on board the aircraft. It's nice to be able to get dressed up and go out once you reach your destination but nobody is going to expect you to get dressed up to the nines while you're traveling.

Tip 6. Get out in the sunshine.

Once you reach your destination get out into daylight as much as possible during the first few days of your trip. Daylight sends powerful signals to your body clock and you'll find that it adjusts far more quickly if it is exposed to the normal cycle of daylight and darkness at your destination. So take advantage of this and don't hide yourself away indoors.

Tip 7. Take something special with you.

It can often be difficult settling in strange surroundings and, in particular, relaxing sufficiently to fall asleep. So, take one or two items of special significance with you, perhaps a family photograph or a favorite bedside ornament, to help give a little bit of the feel of home.

Anniversary Gifts and Perfumes

How many times has your anniversary come around and you quickly rush out to buy something, anything from a myriad of anniversary gifts and perfumes available.

Everyone has probably been there, waiting until the last minute and then feeling a little guilty because the gift didn't quite say what you wanted it to say.

Historically anniversary gifts and perfumes have consisted of things like cotton for the 2nd anniversary and ivory for the fourteenth.

Who wants to give or receive those kind of gifts these days?

Modern anniversary gifts and perfumes.

Here's a suggestion if you're really not sure what to give your spouse. Why not try perfume for her or cologne for him. Admit it, every once in a while you've smelled a certain fragrance on someone else that made you stop and really take notice, right?

Sure everyone has.

Why not go ahead and buy that special fragrance and give it as anniversary gifts and perfumes? It would make the perfect, personal gift that your spouse would enjoy and appreciate every time they put it on; and you would too.

Spritz On Some Flavor!

Now that everything from a tan to pantyhose comes in a spray form, it's little wonder someone has found a way to put liquid pork in a can.

Well, almost. Smoked bacon, as well as chocolate fudge, strawberry shortcake, ranch and banana split are among the flavors featured in a new line of spritz-on food toppings. The "flavor sprays" are designed to simulate the taste of dieters' favorite foods while eliminating the guilt of eating them -- each contains no fat, calories, carbohydrates or cholesterol.

"(Spray-on) birthday-cake is going to be a home run.", predicts Sean Pomper, operations director for Flavor Spray Diet. "You actually taste the vanilla cake with the chocolate filling inside and the sprinkles and the cream on top."

The 18 unlikely sprays are the brainchild of celebrity chef David Burke, a New York culinarian noted for his research and new product development.

New York Post food critic Cynthia Kilian wrote that the spray-on bacon's "flavor charade (works) surprisingly well on scrambled eggs." The hot and sour spray didn't fare as well, causing a "potent sting of heat accompanied by a musty tang." Root beer float was dubbed "a clear winner."

Each can contains a liquid extract made up of water, salts, emulsifiers and natural and artificial flavors, with Splenda used as a sweetener in the "dessert" sprays. A 60ml supply will cost Canadians about $7.00, plus shipping, and is said to last six months (flavorspraydiet.com).

Pomper recently shipped two cases of product to a Maryland hospital that's now using Burke's dessert sprays on patients with dysphagia, a condition characterized by difficulties swallowing. "The patients are loving it," Pomper reports. "They're on a feeding tube but they're actually getting a hit of strawberry shortcake, marshmallow, chocolate, root beer.... tastes they haven't had in their mouths for years.

Krystyna Sieciechowicz, a University of Toronto food anthropologist, likens the sprays to a harbinger of virtual food.

"When we're staring to extract all these ingredients, how far are we from saying we'll have a pill and we'll have a spray that gives you a whiff of onions?" she muses. "It may be 100 or 200 years off, but I think that's what we're preparing ourselves for -- food that's a mere remembrance of what the original was."

Set Yourself Apart From The Ordinary

I have written at length about the need to anticipate your visitors' needs. I have talked about how the first screen of the homepage needs to connect immediately and directly with the task each visitor has on his or her mind. I have talked about finding the search words and phrases people use to find your site, so you can use these same words on your homepage. And so on and so on.

And I think it is all good advice. When visitors arrive at your site for the first time, the best outcome you can hope for is that they think, "Excellent, I'm in exactly the right place. I can find what I'm looking for right here."

The problem is, the more you write the page to suit the needs of the reader, the less character it has.

There is a danger that you will become like that person at a party who roams from group to group, agreeing with everyone and simply reflecting back everyone's opinions and views. People like that are boring and ultimately very irritating. They never risk expressing opinions of their own.

The same thing can happen with a website. The more you try to please people, the thinner the character of your company or organization becomes.

The web has always been a place where strong views and opinions are highly valued. Think about the newsletters you subscribe to and the discussion lists you take part in. The most valuable contributions are those that express real character, where people take a strong position and are not afraid to express it and stand by it.

So there is a balance here. Yes, write your homepage to appeal to the reader, but also let some of the character of your organization shine through. This doesn't mean adding the mission statement, or shoveling the latest corporate sound bites onto your site. Heaven forbid.

But you can express some character. You can say what you believe. You can take a position and let people know what you stand for, and what you stand against.

The benefit? You'll differentiate your site from others in the same space. You'll stand out from the crowd. You'll be recognized. You'll earn respect for taking a position. You'll catch people's attention. You'll make them want to tell their friends and colleagues about your site.

You don't have to take it to extremes. You simply need to write in a recognizable voice.

Enough to set you apart from the ordinary.

Trick or Treating Safety

Halloween is such a fun time of year for kids and adults alike, so its important that we take some precautions to keep it that way! Here's my list of trick or treating tips for your family.

Wear comfortable shoes!!

Carry a flashlight

Wear something with a reflector on it (you can even find reflector tape and paint at your local home improvement store.

Go out before dark-especially for little ones. The big kids tend to flood the streets later at night making it hard for little ones to trick or treat.

Never go into a strangers house, even if they ask you to come in while they go and get some candy.

Throw away all homemade or unwrapped treats. I know some people work hard on making great home made treats, but in this day and age its not worth the risk!

When walking down the street, have the adult walk closest to the road, and the children closest to the houses.

Do not run ahead of the adults-its very easy for children to get carried away and accidentally run into the road.

Do not pet strange animals while trick or treating. Though you really shouldn't ever pet someone's animal with out being invited to do so, you especially shouldn't during trick or treating where your costume or other costumes may be irritating or confusing to the animal.

Do not eat candy as you go.

Always be nice, even when people do not have any candy to give out.

Do not knock on doors where the lights are off.

Watch where you step!

Have a plan before you start. If you are walking in an unfamiliar neighborhood, it is easy to get lost.

When you approach a treat giving house, make sure to yell "Trick or Treat!" very loudly!

When you get home, check all of the candy before allowing children to eat any of it.

You are looking for:

  • old worn wrappers

  • torn wrappers (even with the smallest hole)

  • home made treats

  • unwrapped treats

  • toys with small parts that may be a chocking hazard

  • money (change)

  • fruit

  • any candy that looks like it may have been tampered with.

  • for small children, remove any hard candies. They tend to become slick once in the mouth and can quickly become a choking hazard.

  • lickable stamps

  • glass or sharp objects

If you find any of the above mentioned items, its best to discard them-trust me, there will still be plenty of treats to go around afterwards!!

Have a safe and Fun Halloween-and take lots of pictures!

Drive People to Your Site to Buy Your Products

Bring those visitors back for more, applauding you and sayingBRAVO! They will create a buzz about your great site, and sendyou many more visitors through word of mouth. These visitorsare your personal marketing force.

If you are a non-techie like me, you may not have heard of whata "sticky" Web site is (it is the stuff that lures visitors back againand again). But we do know we want that!

Forget getting to the top of the search engines. Let yourWebmaster do that. Instead, try out some of these low-maintenance ways to bring 'em back to your Web site for more.

1. Upload new, original, and useful content often. Do not thinkof your Web site as a virtual brochure. Avoid blatant ads suchas banners, which turn visitors off. Give them information onlythey can't find anywhere else-and give it free. People wantand need how to's, especially.

Always think benefits when you post some new article. Helpingyour visitors get what they want will bring their trust and respectas an expert, and eventually, bring you profit from your book, other products, or service.

2. Update your Web site content regularly and often, perhapsdaily or weekly. If someone visits your site and finds nothingnew, they will disappear into cyberspace and spend their timeon other sites.

If you don't want to write articles, copy and paste other people'sarticles or tips from their ezines or Web sites with theirpermission, of course. Keep the pieces under 1200 words.Common lengths are anywhere from 75-1000 words. You caninclude a tip list, past feature articles from your ezine, an excerptfrom your book, poetry, a heart-felt story, or a character sketchfrom your fiction book.

3. Publish your own ezine. Make it short and sweet. Start witha monthly, then see if you can do it bi-weekly. If you don't stayin regular touch with your possible buyers, they will forget youand your book's message.

People want to know you better, so they can trust you and thinkof you as an expert in your field. Your free information, tips andresources will keep them as subscribers. If they like your ezine, they will recommend it to others. The opt-in eNewsletter tops allother ways to drive traffic to your site, and it can be mass mailedfree, too. Check out www.topica.com.

4. Include a recommending service on your site. Your repeatvisitors create new traffic. Check out www.Recommend-It.com. It's free, fast, and versatile. Each time someonerecommends your site, they are entered in a contest to win aPalm V reading device and a chance to win $10,000.

5. Host a forum on your site where people can interact fully andyou can share your knowledge and offer suggestions. It's agreat way to help others and get these people visiting your siteoften because they want to know you as a real person. Withouta chance to interact with you people lose interest.

Allow your visitors to post a message or reply to othermessages. They will check back every few days for newmessages or replies. To find these services, do a search on "freewebmaster resources." Two specific ones:http://www.delphi.com and http://www.evryone.net. Check outthis discussion group http://www.ablake.net/forum/

6. Remind your visitors to bookmark your site. Tell them youupdate material every day or week. If you omit this, you passup a great opportunity to lure repeat, loyal visitors. You wantmore visitors, and you want them to spend a lot of time on yoursite. The more time they spend on your site, the more likelythey will check out your products or services pages.

The biggest complaint from clients is that they get hits, but notenough sales. When you follow the above tips, you'll be muchmore likely to succeed at increased sales.

7. Serialize some of your content. If visitors get it all in one visit, what's to keep them coming back?Put one part of an article, special report, or excerpt from your book on your site eachweek or so. Let people know this through your ezine.

8. Post a monthly special only for your Web visitors. Call it"Discount of the month," or"Freebie of the month." Withoutincentives your audience will go elsewhere. Go to your filesnow, and see what you can use. This fabulous technique hasworked well for the author.

9. Enjoy the journey. Each day, you can learn something thatwill make your Web site more real, more YOU. Let yourpassion show! Add some personal information such as thepersonal column. 'The Coach's Corner" is a new column in theezine, "The Book Coach Says." It mentions personal writingand marketing set backs, boo boos, along with a tip or so. Putpersonal messages on your site too.

10. Allow everything you do on the Net to be easy and fun. Ifyou don't love to create ad copy, or if you don't like the technicalside, delegate it to someone who loves it. Do what you do bestand hire the rest. It's far smarter to eliminate all struggle fromyour adventure, so you will shine at what you do.

The biggest complaint from clients is that they get hits, but notenough sales. When you follow the above tips, you'll be muchmore likely to succeed at increased sales.

Top 3 Yogis Secrets for Health and Happiness

For hundreds of years, the yogi's have been known to know the secrets for health, peace and happiness. In this short, but informative article, I will briefly describe 3 of these secrets with you.

Let's get started:

Secret#1: You are not your physical body.

The Yogis believe, you know, that the real Man is not his body. They know that the immortal "I" of which each human being is conscious to a greater or lesser degree, is not the body which it merely occupies and uses. They know thatthe body is but as a suit of clothes which the Spirit puts on and off from time to time. They know the body for what it is, and are not deceived into the belief that it is the realMan. But while knowing these things, they also know that the body is the instrument in which, and by which the Spirit manifests and works. They know that the fleshly covering is necessary for Man's manifestation and growth in this particular stage of his development. They know that the body is the Temple of the Spirit. And they, consequently, believe that the care and development of the body is as worthy a task as is the development of some of the higher parts of Man, for with an unhealthy and imperfectly developed physical body, the mind cannot function properly, nor can the instrument be used to the best advantage by its master, the Spirit.

Secret#2: You are not your mind.

You need to realize the superiority of the "I" or "real self" over the mind, as well as over the body; the fact that the mind is not the "I" or "real self", but is merely an instrument for the expression of the "I"; the fact that the "I" is master of the mind, as well as of the body; that the "I" is behind all thought; that the "I" can set aside for consideration the sensations, emotions, passions, desires, and the rest of the mental phenomena, and still realize that it, the "I," is apart from these mental manifestations, and remains unchanged, real and fully existent; that the "I" can set aside any and all of its mental tools and instruments, as "not I" or "not real self" things, and still consciously realize that after so setting them aside there remainssomething--itself--the "I" which cannot be set aside or taken from; that the "I" is the master of the mind, and not its slave.

Secret#3: You are "one with everything"

To be truly happy and healthy, you need to be aware of "The Oneness of All". You need to bear in mind the Universality of Life. All of the Universe is alive, vibrating and pulsating with life and energy and motion. There is nothing dead in the Universe. Life is everywhere, and always accompanied by intelligence. There is no such thing as a dead, unintelligent Universe. Instead of being atoms of Life floating in a sea of death, we are atoms of Life surrounded by an ocean of Life, pulsating, moving, thinking, living. Every atom of what we call Matter is alive. It has energy or force with it, and is always accompanied by intelligence and life. Look around us as we will; at the animal world;at the plant world;yes, even at the world of minerals and we see life, life, life;all alive and having intelligence. When we are able to bring this conception into the realm of actual consciousness;when we are able not only to intellectually accept this fact, but to even go still further and _feel_ and be conscious of this Universal Life on all sides, then are we well on the road to attaining the Cosmic Consciousness.

There you have it, 3 Yogi's secrets for health and happiness! Start meditating on these 3 universal truth and will begin to see some positive change in life.

Low Fat French Toast

French toast was one of my favorite breakfast foods when I was little. Dieting can be hard, especially when you can not enjoy many of the foods that you love. Here is a twist on the traditional french toast recipe, that once used to be high in fat. With just a few modifications you can turn french toast into a healthy food. I make this for my husband and he can not even tell that this is a low fat version. It's also been tested on Marines in my house and they loved it. So share it with your family and turn breakfast into a healthy meal.

Ingredients:

- 1 large egg
- 2 egg whites
- 1 cup skim milk (or 1%)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 loaf of white bread

You can add any other spices or modify the ones that are given to meet your taste.

Directions:

1)Beat the egg and egg whites together in bowl.

2)Add the skim milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnimon to eggs and mix well.

3)Preheat a nonstick frying pan over medium heat.

4)Dip bread into batter and place in frying pan. How long you keep the bread in the batter will determine how much bread you will use when making french toast.

Quickly dipping the bread in the batter will help prevent the the bread from falling apart when trying to cook them.

You can top the french toast with powdered sugar, syrup, or jelly.

How to Save Money by Making Your Own Sign

In the sign industry we commonly refer to the material that the sign is made out of as the substrate. Examples include, wood, vinyl banners, aluminum, coroplast, etc. But what many customers do not realize is that they can purchase vinyl lettering or vinyl decals and apply them directly to typical substrates themselves. Translation - saving money by buying blank substrates inexpensively at local hardware stores such as Home Depot and Lowes and avoiding the prices sign companies need to charge to apply the material. Although you do pay tax by buying locally on the substrate, you can save tax on the vinyl by ordering over the internet.

What are vinyl letters and/or vinyl decals? They are letters (or images) that come prespaced according to customer specifications as words, phrases, or sentences on pre masking tape. The lettering is self adhesive and by removing the paper backing, they can be applied directly to almost any substrate, car, boat, truck, windows, snowmobiles, jet skis, vans, store fronts, etc. Make sure the surface is extremely clean and free of dust or lint. Once the lettering or decal has been aligned, simply rub over the masking covering the vinyl and then remove it. The result will be perfectly spaced lettering or a decal designed as ordered with a professional look. Most sign companies will allow you to purchase multiple lines of vinyl lettering with the spacing between the lines defined by you. You can also usually obtain a combination of vinyl lettering and images on one decal.

Another tack you may wish to consider is to have the entire sign printed on vinyl made to fit the substrate you prepurchased (with a small bleed of additional vinyl to wrap around the sides). We must caution you that this is a bit more tricky to apply than vinyl lettering, but problems can be overcome with care and some suggestions. When applying the vinyl to the substrate, remove the paper backing about two inches at a time, align, and then press or roll it on the surface. We recommend a roller for the application (roller applicator). Once the first part is properly aligned and applied, remove another two inches of the backing and proceed in this manner with the rest of the sign. Another trick is to moisten the substrate so you can move the vinyl if you accidentally align it improperly when first applied. The water prevents it from adhering permanently for a few seconds.

When you apply vinyl, it is inevitable that you will run into the "bubble" problem. Tiny bubbles of captured air will form under the vinyl. Usually these can be worked out with the roller but in some circumstances, they will remain. A blow dryer (not too hot) can be used to heat the vinyl up so that the air can be rolled out easier. Under some circumstances if the bubble is large, the vinyl can be heated and the bubble punctured with a pin (careful here - only a tiny hole is needed). Be careful not to heat the vinyl too much because it can permanently deform it.

Recently, a new product has been introduced which enables the vinyl to be adjusted if it is pressed on but incorrectly aligned. The adhesive does not seal permanently for a few hours after it is applied. The material is a bit more expensive but well worth it if you are inexperienced. Don't feel bad. I know many sign companies that are now going to the easy stick vinyl to avoid large overhead costs caused by mistakes with the old permanent seal vinyl.

How to Write a Media Release That Wins You Coverage & Exposure

The Today show? The New York Times? Vanity Fair? What's your dream hit? While nothing inspires more fear and trepidation in public relations professionals than media relations, it doesn't have to be complicated. There are 2 keys to a press release... the Headline and making sure it doesn't sound like an advertisement, but more like it is news.A media release (which also goes by its former name, the press release) is a one page, double spaced, single-sided document designed to transmit news about books, products, and people. Don't forget that real live people, editors and producers, must pull the release from the fax machine and be motivated to read it.

In today's world, getting editors and producers to actually read your release is a challenge. Every day, people tap into the possibilities of free publicity and are becoming proactive in getting their voice heard. Editors & Writers, receive upward of hundreds to thousands of releases a week. However, only a small percentage is both appropriate for their audience and grabs my attention.

Distribution of your press release is just as important as the writing of the release. You want it to be seen, and more importantly, written up in the media. Below are 10 strategies to help you write releases that get your message heard and distributed.

1. Make sure the information is newsworthy.

? The most important information, including who, what, where, when and why, in the first sentences of the releases body, emphasizing why the event/article is newsworthy. You are competing with countless other issues and organizations for increasingly scarce space or air time.

? The selection of your project for funding (if timely),Any additional funding/extensions you receive, Any goals/stages your initiative has reached, How your initiative effects your community, university, etc, A local example of a national story (for example if any national stories appear on teaching and technology)

2. Target your audience. Only contact editors who write about your industry or topic. Make sure you send the press release to the appropriate editor; don't send a food story to a sports editor.

? Don't make the mistake of sending a press release to a group of general media sources in hopes that someone will pick up the story. In most cases, the bulk of your work will end up in the wastebasket, if your announcement has no interest to their readers.

? Find out the best way to contact your target audience. Not every journalist wants press releases by email. You may need to use postal mail, email, or faxes.

3. Write an attention grabbing headline. Make sure the first 10 words of your release are effective, as they are the most important.

? Realize that your headline must immediately "hook" a busy producer or editor at first glance. If your headline doesn't hook them, they won't read further.

? First, the subject line spells the difference between the release being opened or deleted. Second, you must target delivery of the email release carefully, or you risk being banned forever to the recipient's "bozo" file.

4. Deal with the facts. Avoid excessive use of adjectives and fancy language

? Clients Love Hits. Despite all the counseling, strategy, partnerships, writing and more, clients want media coverage. Until the industry creates better measurement systems, a full page Business Week story becomes a tangible "product" that your clients can hold in their hands and show to their boss.

? Follow with supporting background information and details. Some suggest a quote from a books/article/website to add credibility and depth to the release.

5. Provide as much Contact information as possible: Individual to Contact, address, phone, fax, email, Web site address.

? If writing about a web site, make sure the site is updated before you send your release. Editors will visit the site if they have an interest in your product/service.

6. If sending an email release, make sure to write the release within the body of the message.

? Don't send email press releases with attachments - they will be deleted immediately upon receipt.

7. It's All About Relationships. Whose call are you more likely to take? A vendor you've never spoken to before or one who has taken the time to develop a relationship and truly understands your needs? It is no different with the media. Building relationships NOW means that reporters will take your call when you've got an important story to tell. Best of all, even if they can't help you on this particular one, they are likely to refer you to another reporter who can. As with any relationship, building trust is critical. Do what you say you will, within the timeframe you give. You may not be able to provide all the information requested, but if you are upfront about what you can and can't do, reporters will appreciate it and remember. One reminder: everything is on the record, no matter how close you are.

? Journalists and producers need you and your news, but will lose respect if you hammer them with releases that don't apply to their market or beat. Discriminate.

? If this is a show or publication you are keenly interested in, call them with "new information" designed to create more excitement in featuring you.

? Keep a notebook with you and jot down names of appropriate media contacts as you read publications and hear radio interviews.

8. Know editor's deadlines. If you are sending a time-sensitive release, don't expect a magazine editor to cover your event scheduled for next week. Find out what the appropriate "lead time" is to send your press release for possible distribution in their media. Make it as easy as possible for media representatives to do their jobs.

9. Good Writing Counts. Adopt a journalistic approach. Look carefully at how reputable publications such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, or The Wall Street Journal write a story. What is the lead? What type of quotes do they use? Study different types of stories -- features, executive changes, and news articles. For the most part, you'll see the inverted pyramid style where the most important information is in the lead and the rest of the story flows from there. Despite recent e-word mania, it's time to eliminate jargon and buzz words. Say what you want, but say it simply and plainly. Another sign of weak writing is the use of cliches. Finally, ever feel like you just can't write that press release? This blockage often indicates you don't have enough information. Do outside research. Interview a customer. Get another perspective. Then you're sure to end up with a solid product that would appeal to any journalist.

10. Keep a "swipe file" of clever advertisements or headlines you can refer to when you need a creative boost.

Laura Aldridge is CEO of Aldridge Corporation, a minority, woman-owned strategic marketing communication & public relations firm. Big deal. That title sounds powerful, but don't be fooled. She readily admits you might catch her in the line of a local Los Angeles area store, playing with her husband and kids at the lake, coaching her daughter's cheerleading squad, watching youth football practices, or art show.

And on occasion she finds time to write articles on various topics, writing training material for technology based applications, speak at a conference or two, designing just about anything for almost anybody, making calls and trying to get her client's all the press and exposure they can handle, and serve on the board of directors for some great organizations. She's worked for a couple of great companies that saw the value of her ideas and style; she has won an award or two. But don't let the "powerful" title trick you; she's just "Laura" to most people.

There are sets of temporary tattoos that include letters (for her name), along with romantic phrases. This one is hard to beat as a romantic gift idea!

Puzzles

Do you want to romance and intrigue your love all at once? Consider creating a special message just for her, and then having it made into a puzzle. This romantic gift idea can be done in several ways. You can make the puzzle with larger pieces, so that it's more fun, or you could really challenge her and make a 100 piece or more puzzles!
